I feel like raining on a few parades
Guess what? Today is NOT a major mark in history. Obama is NOT full-blooded black - he's MIXED. Call it a photoshop all you want, that doesn't change the fact. Most of us who bothered trying to pay attention knew this anyway. Yes, he has black in him and it most definitely shows, but how many other presidents had a black ancestor or two themselves? There has NEVER been a full-blooded anything president. They've ALL been mixed. Italian, russian, scottish, we're ALL mutts.

Deal with it. You're celebrating a "major event" that's been done since the first president the US has ever seen. XD

America seems to think that if you're mixed with black. You're black.

I've gotten so much crap because of this. I'm not even mixed with white. Rage.

There's never been a President with that much black in them at the very least.

However, I don't think it's a huge deal. I liked him for his charisma, not his skin color. I think the news insisting on focusing on all the black people sobbing happily is silly.

"Guess what? Today is NOT a major mark in history. Obama is NOT full-blooded black"

... which, incidentally, is why he's commonly referred to as the first African-American president.

Whatever that means, amirite?

Up to -this- point, I've never heard anyone argue anything about anyone being full-blooded or not, Obama or otherwise. Even more, when people refer to him as black, they're definitely -not- arguing anything about his being full-blooded; they're pointing to his skin color.

Last I checked, no other European immigrant president has the same skin color as Obama. Last I checked, also, had a man with the same skin color as Obama -tried- to do this in, say, the 1920s, maybe the late 1800s, he most definitely would have have been rejected for the position, if not outright attacked.

That is the -major- mark in history. That he wasn't judged by his skin color, but rather by the content of his character.

It is a historical milestone.

If you can't accept that, get to the back of the bus.

Wow, friend. You missed the entire point of my post, and that's all I've got to say about this.

Back to celebrating the major mark in history, then.

However, while I'm celebrating my ignorance, I don't see why we can't discuss the issue further-

"Italian, russian, scottish, we're ALL mutts."

Certainly-

I think there might be some confusion, however, on the idea of "black" as an ethnicity.

Italians hail from Italy; Russians from Russia; Scottish from Scotland. While I don't think it exists, (although it would be amusing if there were), I don't think there is a Blackland, Blacktonia, Blackestein.

Black, specifically, refers to the color of the skin, though some people also consider it as hailing from some generic part of Africa--although, since not all black people come from Africa, this is incorrect.

While all of us share some degree of heritage with Africa (at the very least, genetics speaks to that), not all of us are black, even though we might have had a parent or two from Africa.

Obama is most certainly black--and, unless I'm horribly blind, the first -black- president, as well as the first African-American president.

Your friend,

Me.

Howdy,

If you're trying to be racy and offensive, by all means, disregard my comment. However, if you needed clarification as to why most everyone else saw yesterday as a major mark in American history, then my comment is legitimate.

I don't want to feed the troll, but I do like helping people understand historical perspective.

Now, time to crawl back into bed. I work in three hours. -_-
